JOOMLA! 1.5 application workshop offered to the public by CVISNET

Being true to its mission which is to make IT work for everyone especially for its partner-agencies and clienteles, Central Visayas Information Sharing Network Foundation, Inc. (CVISNET) has once again hosted a training entitled WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT USING JOOMLA! 1.5 on July 27-29, 2011 at DOST 7 Conference Room, Sudlon, Lahug, Cebu City.

The three-day hands-on workshop is in partnership with the Confederation of Scientific and Professional Organizations (COSPO) and the Department of Science & Technology Region 7 (DOST 7).  The workshop was participated by the representatives from the academe namely - Leyte Normal University, Saint Joseph Institute of Technology – Butuan, Negros Oriental State University. Some government offices such as the Philippine National Police (PNP) - Cebu City and Siquijor, Department of Environmental and Natural Resources Region 7 (DENR 7), Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD), and the Municipalities of Catarman - Camiguin, San Fernando - Cebu, Barili – Cebu took interest and sent some representatives for the workshop.

But what is Joomla?

From its release in 2005, Joomla! or the anglicized Swahili word which means “all together” or “as a whole”  had been downloaded 23 million times and won awards because of its accessibility to the public. Many aspects, including its ease-of-use and extensibility, have made Joomla the most popular Web site software available. Best of all, it is an open source solution that is freely available to everyone. It is an award-winning content management system (CMS), which enables the user to build Web sites and powerful online applications. Through this, one can keep track of every piece of content on the created Web site, much like the local public library that keeps track of books and stores them. Content can be simple text, photos, music, video, documents, or just about anything one can think of.

Workshop Output.

The workshop has provided the participants a good venue for a learning opportunity to develop and enhance customized applications for their respective websites as they were individually mentored to make their own works online such as:

 

  •   Add news, events, links, users, content pages, media and understand how to make the most of Joomla! powered websites.
  •   Load media and insert into content
  •   Layout website  including positioning of modules, assigning them to pages & templates
  •   Select & install templates
  •   Add, edit and delete content using WYSIWYG editor
  •   Set up and Installation of Joomla 1.5
  •   Introduction to joomla, site structure and administration of control panel 
With the positive turnout of the workshop and appreciative comments from the participants, CVISNET will definitely continue its advocacy on timely communication of IT advancements through information sharing. 

South Korean ICT Solutions Company Visited CVISNet

Last April 20, 2011, Mr. Keon Kook Ahn of Link Road Inc. visited the Department of Science and Technology, Region VII. Link Road is a Korean company that focuses on automation systems.

CVISNet, as the chief organizer of the activity welcome Mr. Keon Kook Ahn for a short presentation of his company's products and solutions. Mr. Ahn was also their company's representative and presentor during the e-Smart World Asia 2011. Engr. Rene Burt Llanto, the DOST VII DIirector, Engr. Roberto Cabarrubias and Mr. Jeffrey Llanto, President and Managing Consultant of CVISNet, representatives, members and staff from different offices of DOST VII and a few of the On-the-Job trainees were there during the presentation. Mr. Ahn's visit was the outcome and the response of his company after witnessing all the projects presented during the e-Smart World Asia 2011 which was also attended by CVISNET at Singapore.

Video system integration, domestic models integrated imaging system of IP surveillance system, disaster situation room construction and real time monitoring that would be helpful in the implementation of advance IT monitoring solutions were discussed during the presentation. Questions were raised after Mr. Ahn's presentation.

Mr. Keon Kook Ahn also visited CVISNet office and Mr. Llanto showed him some projects undergone by the foundation. 

ICT in San Remigio barangays

CEBU, Philippines - The Central Visayas Information Sharing Network has trained barangay officials of the municipality of San Remigio, Cebu in Information and Communication Technology, a major initiative of the local government unit to be tech-savvy.

Barangay captains, councilors, secretaries and treasurers of 27 barangays participated the ICT Congress recently held at the town hall.

Its objectives is to increase perception of its citizenry of what the government is doing and what opportunities are available through the use of ICT as a tool, and likewise to manifest appreciation of ICT as a tool to achieve transparency in governance, increasing resources, more efficient basic services delivery, more up-to-date information and more effective feedback system.

 

CVISNet Presents PICeS Project in Singapore

The Central Visayas Information Sharing Network Foundation was invited to the e-Smart World Asia 2011 last February 22-24, 2011 held at Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Center in Singapore. Delegates from different countries were convened and ASEAN government projects were presented to provide value-added opportunities for government and corporate executives to experience three advanced smart concepts from Korean representative IT companies. The affair was organized by the Korea Trade Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) and the National Information Society Agency (NIA). KOTRA is a Korean government agency commited in promoting international trade and NIA is a project of the Korean government, which aims at realizing a ubiquitous sensor network (USN) society and fostering related industries.

Among the participants were Engr. Roberto A. Cabarrubias, president of CVISNet and Mr. Jeffrey Llanto, Managing Consultant of CVISNet who presented the Philippine Integrated Community e-System Project (PICes). PICeS is primarily developed by CVISNet with the aim to demonstrate competence in e-administration paving the way of full operationalization of e-governance, education, health and disaster mitigation in the region. Through the said activity, CVISNet had the chance to present the foundation's background, giving insights to all participants on what CVISNet really is and the services catered by the foundation. CVISNet was also given the opportunity to meet different Korean companies as well as some companies and government agencies and organizations in Asia.
